How to compare two trips before you book either

Every trip on this site has a twin. Set them next to each other and compare two trips before you book either, then tell us which one you want reserved.

Sixteen trips, eight pairs, $1,285 to $4,980 per person.

What the word means on this page: you ask, and the desk puts the reservation through to whichever company actually runs the week. Your money never passes through The Briar Review Bookings LLC; there is no field on this site that asks for a card, and until you have read a written figure and said yes to that operating company’s own terms, nothing is held in your name.

Roughly half the people who call this office naming a place end up going somewhere else. Not because they were talked out of anything. Because the place they named and the place next to it are close enough that the name was standing in for something broader, and once the two are laid out in facts the second one turns out to fit the calendar, the walking, or the money better. That is the whole reason this page exists: you can compare two trips before you book either, at your own kitchen table, without anybody in Charlotte steering you.

Booking here means one specific thing, so it is worth stating early. You send a request; somebody here reads it and places the reservation with whichever company runs that particular week. Not a cent leaves your hands in this direction at any point. No card number is held, none is asked for, and there is no checkout anywhere on this site. The operating company bills you directly under its own terms, and this desk takes its commission from that company once you travel. That is also why a comparison is more useful here than a recommendation would be: our fee is the same either way, so we have nothing to gain by pushing one half of a pair, and no reason to pretend the difference is smaller than it is.

The rule this office keeps is short. We will state every difference we know of, in figures where figures exist, and we will not choose. That includes the differences that make a trip harder to sell: longer transfers, thinner shoulder seasons, a road that closes, a week with three moves instead of one. If you ask us point blank which one, the honest answer is that we do not know your knees, your week off, or who you are going with. What we can do is put the two columns side by side and answer questions until one of them stops being a question.

aland or funen
One week routes you across water on scheduled boats and the other routes you across bridges you can ride at any hour, and that single mechanical fact reorganizes everything else about the day.
arran or mull
Mull covers roughly three times the land area of Arran but its main roads are largely single track, so an hour of driving buys far less ground there, and that single arithmetic difference reshapes what a seven day itinerary can hold on each.
connemara or donegal
Connemara sits roughly two and a half hours from Dublin Airport and about ninety minutes from Shannon; Donegal town is four to four and a half hours from Dublin and there is no comparable airport nearer than Dublin or Belfast.
dolomites or julian alps
The Dolomites carry roughly ten times the summer walking traffic, and everything else follows from that single number.
exmoor or northumberland
Northumberland National Park plus the forest beside it covers roughly 580 square miles against Exmoor's 267, so one trip involves about twice the daily driving before anything else is decided.
harz or eifel
One range lost most of its spruce canopy in the last decade and now walks largely in open light, and the other did not, which decides the question for most people before any other fact is reached.
luberon or quercy
Housing is roughly 62 percent of the Luberon package and roughly 41 percent of the Quercy one, so the gap between the two figures is mostly a lodging gap rather than a difference in what the week contains.
picos or alpujarras
One week runs June through September and the other runs October through May, so for most people the dates they already hold decide it before any other difference is reached.

What a side by side page will not contain

A verdict
No sentence anywhere calls one half of a pair the stronger trip, and none ever will | A score or a mark out of anything | Nothing here is graded, ranked, starred or placed in an order that implies quality
A preference
We do not write that we like one better, and no staff member's favorite appears on this site | A claim about what anybody else charges | Our figures describe our own itineraries and nothing outside them
A judgment about you
We do not tell you what sort of traveler you are or what most people in your position do | A safety opinion about a place | Conditions, closures and terrain are described as facts; whether a place suits you is yours to decide
A missing difference
If a trip has a longer drive, a steeper day or a thinner season, it is written down | A soft edge on a firm number | Prices, night counts and distances in miles are stated plainly and are not rounded to flatter

Send both names and we will answer both

If two halves of a pair are still live after you have read them, say so in the note below and send them together. A written figure covering both, with what is in and what is not, takes two to four working days. A short question about one detail is faster than that, and you will have an answer before the working day ends. If you would rather talk it through, call a travel agent in Charlotte on (704) 362-5187 and name the pair.

Requests through this form are accepted 24/7, and the form itself never closes. Nothing you send is a commitment. You can hold a request open for weeks while you settle a date, and you can drop one half of a pair at any point without owing anything, which is set out in full at the cancellation terms. The steps from first note to confirmed reservation are at how a request is handled, and whatever keeps coming up gets a plain answer at the questions people ask.

One last thing about the name over the door. The Briar Review is not a publication and does not assess, mark or pass judgment on trips, companies or places. The Briar Review Bookings LLC is a travel agency. The pages here exist to arrange travel, and the paired format is a way of describing two itineraries accurately at once, not a contest between them.

Reserve a vacation package, or ask about both halves of a pair

This form takes requests 24/7 and there is no point in the week when it stops. Whatever arrives here is read by a human being before the end of that same working day. Pricing your dates needs two to four working days on top of that, since two separate companies have to reply before the figure can be written down.

Nowhere on this page, or any other page here, is there somewhere to type a card. Pressing send does not put your name against a bed: it begins the asking. What makes a reservation real is you reading a written figure, seeing which company issued it, and agreeing to that company’s terms. Look at the cancellation terms first.
